The links below goes to a special report we’ve just published for our contributing photographers called ‘The Death of Stock Photography?’ It takes a hard look at some of the key issues facing the industry and our operations, and suggests a number of changes I believe we all need to consider if we’re to compete and prosper in the current marketplace.

It also outlines a number of key changes and improvements we hope to make to the GlobalEye photographer’s package in the next 12-24 months that will impact all our Members and have flow on benefits for our photographer-subscribers on sites like this. So I’ll encourage everyone to download a copy and take some time to read through it in the next few weeks!

  • Right on the money yet again Matt! You’ve obviously given this a lot of thought and it’s great that you share all this with us. I’ve been fighting a losing battle with my stock libraries for a few years now but you’ve given me some hope that there’s a way it can work. I’m heading over to Globaleye (again) to have a closer look at your package (again) and start on an application (again)! Yep… I’m one of your serial procrastinators!

  • Yes Matt What you told is the only way, for real professional photographers and the industry which relies in it, to sustain. From my opinion there should only be rights managed image sales. So this ‘Free’, ‘Discount’, ‘$1’, things will stay apart from the real need of Images

  • Hi Matt I read your article (in fact read it several times) you raised a lot of points and I can clearly say that I can’t disagree with any of them. I’ve only been a member of Oz/Global for a short time that’s not to say that I have been following it, a photographer friend and a member as well recommended it to me a few years ago. As for stock photography (pre internet)I have been down that avenue, even after many published campaigns I was rejected because of not having the volume 500 images at the time and the reference from current members…………..oh how times have changed, I’m not ready to “Prostitute” my work to microstock. As for digital well that relatively new to me 12+months and although technology can give perfect exposures its still up to the photographer to add the other elements, content, composition intent and so on. You have mentioned many valid points and all worthy of Reponses, I have a 5 year plan regarding stock photography and GEI/OZIMAGES are tools that I will be relying on. In closing I would like to add that during my formal training (mid 80’) we were taught a valuable ego altering condition/rule….The 10% rule that is aim for keeping 10% of what you shoot and 1% will be the perfect image. A big component of great image is time as is also the marketing of that image. So Matt keep up the good work, I believe you have a lot of support. Kevin Landry

  • Thanks Matt, Well done/said and lets get on with the future. I am in for the long haul and the membership fee is the least of my concerns after the support you have given me in the last few months since I joined. Almost every area of activity we humans participate in is affected by the very same ailments that you describe. NOT just stock photography. There are those that make things happen and there are those that want to know what happened! Thanks.

  • Thanks Matt, for taking the time to put together this interesting history and current state of our industry. I admire your honesty as, like you say, some of your comments may encourage a few long standing members to throw in the towel. I also came in after the boom and have noticed that each year buyers have been expecting to pay less, while an increasing number have asked for freebies. Some of my former clients are now running photo competitions and for minimal outlay gather many hundreds of great images which they can use any way they wish for as long as they like. Your efforts in helping members to stay ahead of the game is much appreciated.

  • Great reading Matt, and as mentioned very impressive that you’re taking a serious hands-on/get-down-and-dirty approach. This can only benefit everyone on here. When I started the GEI model was very different to most other stock agencies and there was a significant amount of work that I didn’t expect but in just a few short weeks I was seeing my lightboxes ranking right up there in Google… So I know it works. With additional websites with your content, you can’t go wrong. Until now I’ve been sitting back and watching to see how it all panned out but I think now is the time to get on board and go for it.

  • Having come in to this business since the boom, I didn’t really have the same expectations as earlier photographers. However, you have really made some things much clearer for me about what is happening now and what the future may look like and what to do about it. I’m also very impressed by the wide range of ideas you have to improve the business for all your members. You really help me to see GEI/OzImages as a community, not just a business. Thank you for your work.
