Mud Crab Fishing. Mud crabs are caught along the coast of Australia and are particularly common in the north. One of the most productive areas is in the Gulf of Carpentaria at the mouth of the Roper River, where several groups have established a settlement to capture the creatures. They use small dinghies that are tossed on the cross-currents of the Roper and Gulf to set and bring up crab pots for about nine months of the year – a tough life.
