New Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) Butterfly Stock Photos. General Photographer Ernie Hunter has just published a new set of Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) Butterfly photos. The Mourning Cloak Butterfly is usually the first seen in the spring as it over winters by hiding in wood piles or under bark. It does not migrate as the Monarch does, nor does it die like so many others. In the first warm days it's out and looking for a mate and a place to lay eggs. Tiny black caterpillars hatch and continually eat and molt or instar 4 times before entering the chrysalis stage. From there they emerge as adult butterflies to start the cycle over again.View more stock photography by Ernie Hunter here.
